
Dawes also stole the heart of Americans after she became the first black woman to win an individual gymnastics medal. In the year 1996, Dawes and her team competed and made history after winning a gold medal. After immense training and perfection, Dawes entered the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona and became the first African American woman to compete in the Olympic Games. Coach Kelli Hill saw her potential and decided to train her. She started her gymnastics career at the tender age of six.
